Commanders DB Projected To Make All-Rookie Team

The Washington Commanders took a calculated risk on draft night - and so far, it's paying off. Ole Miss cornerback Trey Amos was high on Washington's radar entering the 2025 NFL Draft. The front office strongly considered him at No. 29 overall before ultimately choosing to bolster the offensive line with tackle Josh Conerly Jr. Luckily for Washington, Amos was still available when their second pick arrived at No. 61.

NFL Insider Jeremy Fowler revealed that a back issue arose during medical assessments, causing Amos to slip down the board. Washington wasn't overly concerned, and now, just a few months later, the rookie is looking every bit like a player who could carve out a significant role in the secondary.

NFL.com released their 2025 All-Rookie team and named Amos as a player who will make an instant impact:

"Atrocious cornerback play last September forced Washington to move rookie Mike Sainristil outside, and he acquitted himself quite well, but the scrappy 5-foot-9 playmaker is likely still at his best in the nickel role. So, who can fill the CB slot opposite Marshon Lattimore? The Commanders signed veteran Jonathan Jones, who offers inside/outside ability, but Amos sure has the look of a Dan Quinn corner.

Washington was thrilled when he was still available late in the second round, and no wonder: The big, physical CB displayed enticing press-man ability last season in the SEC, earning first-team all-conference honors. Defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. undoubtedly appreciates Amos' ball production (SEE: 3 INTs and 13 PBUs in 2024), having spent much of last season begging for takeaways."

Amos' knack for limiting big plays in college caught the attention of evaluators, and that ability has translated quickly at the pro level. During organized team activities and minicamp, Amos wasted no time making an impression, highlighted by an interception during one of his first OTA sessions.

While the Commanders view Amos as a versatile defender, they believe his best fit is on the outside, a position where Washington struggled throughout the 2024 campaign. With a combination of size, instincts, and ball skills, Amos could fill a much-needed void on the perimeter.

Though a roster spot must still be earned in training camp, Amos has already shown flashes that support the organization's belief in his potential. If he continues on this trajectory, Trey Amos could prove to be one of the biggest value picks of the 2025 draft and a key piece of a revamped Commanders defense.
