NBA Draft rumors: Top prospect ‘appeared nervous’ during Philadelphia 76ers workout, struggled…

A top prospect had a mixed showing during his private workout with the Philadelphia 76ers ahead of Wednesday’s NBA Draft.

According to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony, Baylor shooting guard VJ Edgecombe appeared nervous in front of 76ers staff and struggled with his shot. However, he salvaged the visit with strong interviews that left a positive impression on the front office.

“While sources say Edgecombe appeared nervous during his private workout in Philadelphia and did not shoot the ball particularly well in an unnatural one-on-one setting,” Givony reports, “he made a strong impression in interviews and meetings, something the front office values more highly.”

Edgecombe has reportedly climbed Philadelphia’s draft board as Ace Bailey has fallen. The Rutgers small forward canceled his private workout and visit with the 76ers last week, just days before it was scheduled to take place.

The 19-year-old shot 43.6% from the field and 34% from three while averaging 15 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals in his lone season at Baylor. Drafting Edgecombe would create a crowded backcourt alongside Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain and potentially restricted free agent Quentin Grimes if the 76ers re-sign him.

“Edgecombe’s fit in Philadelphia’s backcourt with Tyrese Maxey and Jared McCain doesn’t appear to be seamless,” Givony noted. “Still, there’s significant upside to tap into with the high-level explosiveness Edgecombe possesses, as well as the flashes he has shown as a passer, shooter and defender.”

The 76ers are prioritizing youth and athleticism after a disappointing 2024-25 season where their “Big 3” of Joel Embiid, Paul George and Maxey missed a combined 134 games. Edgecombe would fit that profile, despite the shooting concerns from his workout.
