Leeds United must make simple next step after Manor Solomon transfer stance

Manor Solomon will forever be etched into Leeds United folklore after his title-winning goal in Plymouth.

That 91st-minute strike sent travelling Whites fans dancing on the streets of the south coast city, and back home to Yorkshire too. Solomon was able to lift the trophy aloft in front of more than 150,000 supporters 48 hours later, amazed at masses of numbers.

Solomon said the club would “always be in my heart” whatever the future held, having heard the away supporters in Plymouth chant ‘sign him up’. The 25-year-old was always reserved about his next steps, given his loan status.

While he told Leeds Live that Daniel Farke remaining as manager would impact any decision to return to Leeds permanently should an offer arrive, he also underlined that he had three years left on his Tottenham Hotspur contract.

Since that sit-down chat, his parent club have secured Champions League football via their Europa League win. The manager who brought him to Spurs, Ange Postecoglou, has been sacked and replaced by Thomas Frank but Solomon has made his stance clear.

He would like to stay at Tottenham if he can. The transfer door is not closed, though, due to the potential of a hefty PSR profit while there are issues over the homegrown quota in Spurs' Champions League squad.

But Frank looks set to assess Solomon this summer before making a decision on his future, which will inevitably mean a delay on any final call. Leeds cannot afford to wait around.

Jack Harrison returns from his loan spell at Everton but few are convinced he is of the required quality, and Largie Ramazani will not be the main starter on the left. United had outlined summer targets months before promotion and will have listed alternatives to Solomon.

They will have learned of the Israeli’s preference and so must therefore focus on bringing in a new face. Other areas perhaps need more immediate focus such as striker and goalkeeper - but the left flank is an important role which needs attention.

The positive is that if Solomon does become available later in the window then they have the upper hand in regards to familiarity and bedding-in time. But rivals would inevitably swoop in, and some would be able to offer European football.

Plus, United will likely be required to spend the bigger bucks on a goalkeeper and a striker - not to mention the need for a new left-back and midfielder. Leeds also need to think about the style of play they will employ, with a focus on transition and breakaway.

Solomon is excellent at retaining the ball and isn’t slow but isn't known for his pace either. His game seems to be bolstered by staged attacking progression and finding spaces in final-third pockets, this reflected in the types of goals he scored.

United would be a better team with Solomon in but that doesn’t mean there isn’t someone more-suited out there. Reality also says that these types of talents will have rival interest so the quicker Leeds can get their foot in the door the better.

Work is continually going on behind the scenes to work towards targets, even if a third signing of the summer is not on the horizon just yet. But Solomon’s stance offers more clarity and gives Leeds the impetus to press ahead more firmly with other wingers they admire.
