Man Utd have‘genuine reluctance’to sell struggling star, he can be a better player after‘polishing’

A lot of players at Manchester United are fighting for their future, but one player seems to have convinced the decision-makers that he is worth persisting with.

After a season where Manchester United broke all sorts of wrong records, it is understandable that players are under the scanner for their efforts.

Add to that Ruben Amorim’s ominous rebuild warning, and nobody except for a few players was safe at Old Trafford.

Amidst the reports of a clearout, it is being reported that one player who struggled immensely in 2024/25 still has believers at Old Trafford. He is being backed to make a comeback to form next season.

Man Utd remain hopeful about Rasmus Hojlund

Antony, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Alejandro Garnacho are the four players who will dictate the fate of this transfer window, but Rasmus Hojlund is not far behind.

Hojlund wants to stay at United, but the 2024/25 season was so bad for him that nobody would roll their eyes if United were to accept an offer for him.

There has been interest in Hojlund from Italy, and the potential scenario of his sale allowing United to get a more proven player in his position is tantalising.

However, The Times reports on their podcast, The Game, that United are convinced of Hojlund’s qualities, and think that with some polishing, he can become “Hojlund 2.0”.

Reporter Charlotte Duncker said (At 17.25 mark): “Obviously, if someone came in with a great fee for Hojlund, they’d accept it. But there’s a genuine reluctance in that they think he’s a better player than everyone’s seeing, a hope that maybe they can still polish him and see Hojlund 2.0 next season.”

2025/26 season is make-or-break for Rasmus Hojlund

If reports are true and Hojlund does have backers at United, they are likely to be there only for the next season and nothing more.

Omar Berrada’s clip at Manchester City, where he has a two-season rule for players to prove themselves, comes to mind, and this will be Hojlund’s second season at United under the new ownership.

The struggles in 2024/25 can be put down to upheaval in the management, as well as executive staff contributing to a team-wide malaise.

However, no such mitigating factors will be heard if the same continues into next season, especially if the team adds players like Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo to the side.

There’s only so long a player can be judged on potential instead of current ability, and for Hojlund, that time is coming next season.

Nobody will be expecting a 30-goal season from the Dane, but he will have to show something better than he did in 2024/25 to save his place in the squad for 2026/27.
