Players who leave Newcastle United on loan will now receive additional support.
Newcastle United new signing Antonio Cordero is set to benefit from the appointment of a dedicated sports scientist for loan players.
The Magpies fought off competition from Barcelona and Real Madrid to sign Cordero, whose move will be made official on July 1 when his contract expires at Malaga.
But the 18-year-old won’t go straight into Eddie Howe’s first-team squad, with the plan to loan him to another European club. Dutch giants Ajax are understood to be leading the chase.
Newcastle United appoint loan sports scientist
And to support Cordero and other players who may head out on loan to further their development, Newcastle have moved to employ a dedicated loan and recruitment team made up of a sports scientist, physiotherapist and psychologist.
Among those joining the club this summer is Colin Clancy, who has announced his new role on LinkedIn. Clancy worked as a senior sports scientist and an academy strength and conditioning coach at Hamilton Academical and Middlesbrough, respectively, before most recently spending eight years at Hibernian as head of physical performance and nutrition.
Clancy wrote: “After a fantastic 8 years, last season was my last with Hibernian FC. 🥬⚽️I’d like to thank all the brilliant staff, coaches and players I’ve worked with in my time at Hibs for making the experience what it was.

“Cup finals, European games and derby wins have been the obvious highlights - but it’s the day to day in the gym and on the grass with good people I’ll remember most fondly. I am excited to be heading back to the north east to begin an exciting new role with Newcastle United. ⚫️⚪️”
Loan sports scientist role explained
First advertising for the role last year, the job description read: “We’re looking for an experienced Sports Scientist to provide sports science support to all Newcastle United loan players across a wide range of age groups. Working with the wider MDT the role will assist in the physical profiling of players to ensure that it mirrors the physical and playing profile of Newcastle United.
“The role will also support the broader Loan Player MDT to identify host clubs for players that provide suitable environments in terms of playing style and player development. Therefore, it will be critical to develop and maintain close relationships through effective communication with host Clubs.
“Taking a data driven approach to player progress and monitoring you will collate progress reports on each player and deliver field based and gym-based sessions, where appropriate, to ensure that players are prepared for the loan pathway. Due to the nature of the role significant UK and European travel will be involved.”
