Sam Greenwood is one of several players who could leave Leeds United this summer.

Most of the focus at Elland Road at this time of the year will be on recruitment, with the Whites having now confirmed the arrival of Jaka Bijol.

However, there will also be plenty of focus on outgoings, with a handful of players likely to be deemed surplus to requirements as Leeds return to the Premier League.

After his loan spell at Preston last season, Greenwood is likely to be one of those offloaded, and his next move could be a crucial one.

Sunderland eye Greenwood homecoming

Greenwood initially started his career at Sunderland, before moving to Arsenal and then Leeds United, where he has rarely had the chance to shine.

The likelihood is that the forward will be allowed to leave this summer, with Sunderland interested in a deal [Daily Mail], and Paul Robinson has highlighted why the move would be a positive.

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robison said: “I think he’s a top young player and I think he deserves his opportunity at the top level.

“I think for him, if Leeds were still in the Championship this year, this year could have been a big year for him, but it would look like Farke’s not going to throw him in in the Premier League.

*“A move for him to Sunderland would be excellent, and it’d give him a great opportunity to showcase his ability at the top level. I think it would be a slight gamble from Sunderland on a player that’s not played at the top level, and you would question why a fellow promotion rival is willing to let him go.*“

Leeds need to cash in on Greenwood this summer

It is almost guaranteed that Greenwood won’t be in Farke’s plans next season, having not even been in them throughout their time in the Championship.

Taking that into account, a permanent exit seems like the only reasonable outcome this summer, though he himself will be keen to go somewhere where he can play regularly.

Whether Sunderland prove to be the club to offer him that remains to be seen, though he’s unlikely to be short of suitors.
