Liam Manning has one clear Norwich City ambition, he's got to stop three years of frustration

Norwich City have become a Championship regular over the course of the last few years, after seasons of yo-yoing between the Premier League and second tier.

While their stay in the Championship has not been as long as others, there is no doubt that the Canaries have missed the top flight.

It’s going to be a busy summer at Carrow Road, with Liam Manning having been handed a generous spending limit to help take the team to the top six after a mid-table finish in 2024/25.

However, with Borja Sainz likely to leave and Leeds United targeting Josh Sargent, this will be a challenge. Nevertheless, EFL Analysis has taken a look at the last time Norwich were in the Premier League.

Norwich City were humiliated in their most recent Premier League season

Between 2018 and 2022, the Canaries won the Championship twice, but also finished rock bottom in the top flight twice.

They struggled greatly in both of their Premier League campaigns, winning five games in each season, finishing with a near identical record from one to the other – gaining a point more in 2021/22.

Under the guidance of Daniel Farke, and then Dean Smith, Norwich found out quickly that they did not have the quality needed to compete. They lost eight of their first 10 matches, picking up just two points before they won two successive games to take them off the bottom of the table.

However, the Norfolk outfit quickly found life difficult again. They won just three of their next 26 matches, and the Canaries were relegated with four games to play in April 2022.

Liam Manning has to bring the Premier League back to Carrow Road

After leading Bristol City to the play-offs last season, Manning knows exactly what he needs to do to help push the Canaries into the top six in 2025/26.

Norwich are closing in on a new goalkeeper, and having that extra layer of protection at the back will be vital after they conceded far too many goals in the previous campaign.

But it is also vital that the board at Carrow Road do not forget that Manning’s tenure is a project, and it is not a quick fix to get the team back to the Premier League. However, in the next few years, they must be close to the top flight as they look to end this wait for England’s highest division.
