Everton have been linked with a stunning return for John Stones this summer.

Since making the switch from Goodison Park to Manchester City in 2016, the defender has been one of the top performers for a consistent period.

However, recent injury issues and a disappointing season at The Etihad have suggested that his future could now lie elsewhere, and David Moyes has an eye on any developments.

Stones lays out plans for his future

Both as an individual and as part of the wider team, Stones‘ time at Manchester City has certainly been impactful so far.

Having got his hands on six Premier League titles and the Champions League, among several other accolades, the 31-year-old is no stranger to winning.

Nevertheless, last season proved to be a difficult one as Stones made just 11 Premier League appearances, six of which were starts.

A battle with fitness has now left the future looking unclear, as Pep Guardiola has made no secret about his desire to take City back to the top of the Premier League.

With a year left on his deal in Manchester, Everton have been linked with a move for the centre-back this summer, but it seems Stones could take some more convincing.

Speaking to the Guardian, the England international revealed: “I’m here [Manchester City], I want to stay here, I love it. I’m here to help the team, and I don’t know what’s been said or speculated, but I hope that kind of shuts it down.”

Moyes can still convince Stones to move

Admittedly, these are probably not the words that the Toffees were hoping to hear from someone they are keen on this summer.

However, it may not be a lost cause just yet, as Guardiola looks to put more of a stamp on his squad for next season after the Club World Cup.

Given that next summer is a World Cup year and Stones will be targeting a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the tournament, there may need to be a level of flexibility when it comes to where he can get those minutes under his belt.

Stones’ minutes have depleted in recent seasons.

A potential return to Merseyside does come at a risk for Moyes, though, due to his injury record, although the experienced player could prove to be more than useful for the Blues.

There is still plenty of time left in the summer transfer window, but Everton might need to sell this one to Stones if they are eager to get it over the line.
