Fabrizio Romano rubbishes exit rumours of Man Utd star linked to swap deals,‘The clear intention…’

Now that the second bid for Bryan Mbeumo has gone in, the focus of Manchester United’s transfer window will turn to who is sold.

Because Man Utd have such a large number of players whose contracts don’t reflect their reality, the club will need to be creative in selling.

Loans, swap deals, or joint ownership, like in Antony’s case, will all have to be on the table.

In that vein, a Man Utd star was linked in potential swap deal scenarios recently, but Fabrizio Romano has completely rubbished the rumours, saying he’s set to stay at the club.

Fabrizio Romano on Mason Mount’s Man Utd future

Mason Mount’s story at Man Utd has been of “one step forward, two steps back” so far due to injuries.

However, near the end of the season, Mount was starting to stay fit and even started in the Europa League final.

Still, the fact that United spent £55 million on him two years ago and probably still have not received 55 90-minute performances from him is remarkable.

As such, he was linked to other clubs as a potential swap asset in deals that could see United offload an underperformer, especially now that Matheus Cunha and potentially Bryan Mbeumo are in town.

However, Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, has rubbished those rumours.

He said: “We have had stories that Mount could be leaving this summer, he could be in swap deals. As of today, the end of June, the clear intention of Mason Mount is to stay at United.

“He’s planning to have an important pre-season, being fully fit, and working under Ruben Amorim, who has always said important words for him. It’s about being fit, but the intention is to stay. Of course, things change in the transfer market all the time, but the current picture is clear.”

Mount rumours were always unlikely to be true

While it’s good to have confirmation from a reliable source like Romano, the exit rumours of Mount were always unlikely to be true.

He’s probably the player Ruben Amorim admires the most in the Man Utd squad, and thinks he can get the best out of.

His versatility in being able to play all midfield positions is also valuable, and most importantly, United will want a return on their investment.

In his current state, nobody will allow United to make a profit on him from a PSR perspective, let alone on his raw transfer fee.

Combine those financial reasons with the sporting logic, and reports of him being among the players set for an exit were far-fetched.

Now, the picture could be extremely different for him if 2025/26 is similar to the previous two campaigns, but for now, he has the backing of the club.
