Cecily: "I can't wait to show what I can do!"

Cecily Wellesley-Smith is chomping at the bit to show Arsenal supporters what she's made of after she signed her first professional contract with us.

The young Gunner has come through our academy and spent time around the first-team squad in training this season.

She has previously spent time playing for Oxford United and has experience with England's youth teams in defence.

“I’m feeling very happy, very proud, not only for myself, but also for my family and all those who have supported me throughout my journey," she said.

“I found out quite a few months ago now, but as soon as I heard I was really happy to sign the deal.

“My family have been so supportive of me and my journey in football. Everything they do for me at home, I’m so grateful.”

Asked what it's been like to be around the first-team in a UEFA Women's Champions League-winning season, Cecily added: “It’s been great. Learning from the best players every day, you can’t really complain, so I’m just hoping for more!

“The defenders, the backline, playing alongside them the communication is top and every day they’re working hard to be better."

In terms of her own playing style and her experience at Oxford, Cecily said: “I’m calm and composed on the ball, trying to win my one-v-one duels to help the team.

“It’s been good getting senior experience \[at Oxford\], playing a lot of games over the past two seasons. It’s been great."

Looking ahead, Cecily has got her sights set on international duty with the young Lionesses before working hard in pre-season.

“We’ve got the U19 Euros next month with England and then come back for pre-season, training as hard as I can," she said. "The fans are amazing so I can’t wait to show them what I can do!

“I’ve played at under-17s and under-19s level before with England. We went to the World Cup this season and that was a great experience.

“The whole environment, going away with your country to places all over the world is an amazing experience.”
