Nigeria’s men’s and women’s flag football teams have won the first-ever African Flag Football Tournament, held in Cairo, Egypt. The event, organised by the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) and NFL Africa, brought together national teams from across the continent.
Team Nigeria claimed victory over Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Cameroon, and Uganda. The women’s team won against Morocco, while the men’s team defeated Egypt in the final match on 21 June.
The Community Flag Football League (CFFL) Nigeria played a central role in this outcome. Over 90 percent of players on both teams were trained within the CFFL structure. The coaching crew, all from CFFL teams, guided the players through the competition with experience and coordination.
In the build-up to the tournament, CFFL hosted a practice game between the national team and the CFFL All-Stars during the Unity Bowl on 15 June. This helped the team prepare for the competitive environment in Cairo.
Browns Nigeria and the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) supported the women’s team through the “Gridiron Gems” initiative, which focuses on developing women in the sport.
Members of the Outlaws Athletics team – Ized Uanikhehi, Dike Meremoth, and Akitoye Ogboye – travelled to Egypt to offer support and share live updates with fans in Nigeria.
