Manchester City are in line for a transfer windfall as goalkeeper James Trafford closes in on a move to Newcastle United.

The Magpies have been long-term admirers of the 22-year-old and reports suggest the Burnley stopper is now set for a medical at St James' Park. The Clarets value Trafford, who left Man City for Turf Moor in a £15million deal in 2023, at around £40million.

City inserted a buy-back option in the move and also a sell-on clause. As a result, the Blues will receive 20 per cent of any profit on their initial sale. Should the England Under-21 international move to the north east for £40million, that would net City £5milion.

The potential for a boost from the Trafford deal is the latest example of City profiting from sales of former academy graduates.

In the last three summers, the Blues have raised more than £190m, plus add-ons, from home-grown academy talents, many of who didn't play for the first team.

The likes of Romeo Lavia and Morgan Rogers generated money for City from sell-on fees in recent seasons, while Liam Delap's move to Chelsea earlier this summer saw City rake in £2million. Trafford's move will swell the coffers further.

He kept a record 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship matches last season, conceding just 16 goals, to help Burnley return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Guardiola's men could explore bringing Trafford back to the Etihad but with Ederson and Stefan Ortega seemingly set to stay at City, there is no immediate need.

The goalkeeping situation at the Etihad is in some long-term doubt with both current keepers out of contract in 12 months, and Trafford could conceivably have been a solution moving forward.

City have an interest in Porto keeper Diogo Costa and this summer signed Marcus Bettinelli to act as third choice following Scott Carson's departure.
