Middlesbrough have unveiled Rob Edwards as their new head coach, bringing to an end a three-week search for Michael Carrick's replacement. The 42-year-old will spearhead the club's bid for promotion into the Premier League after being handed the reins.
Boro spoke to several candidates since parting company with Carrick, with the likes of former Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper and Sheffield Wednesday's Danny Rohl reportedly on their shortlist. There was also said to be two particularly interesting candidates from the continent.
However, it is Edwards who emerged as the leading contender this week after weekend discussions proved fruitful. He will now look to do what the likes of Carrick, Chris Wilder and others could not, and guide Boro back to the Premier League. Edwards has signed a three-year deal at Boro and is joined by Adi Viveash and Harry Watling as his assistants.
Edwards already has experience of doing just that, of course, having taken Luton Town to the top flight in 2023, beating Coventry City in the play-off final at Wembley. The Hatters made a strong fist of Premier League survival too, but ultimately fell short. However, last season went badly for the Kenilworth Road club, and Edwards left in January. They were relegated to League One at the end of the campaign.
He also took Forest Green Rovers into League One for the first time in their history, and has worked as a coach at Wolves and for England Under-16s. It was at Wolves that he worked with Boro head of football Kieran Scott, as well as head of recruitment Chris Jones - with hopes their prior connection will make the new head coach's transition into the role a seamless one.
