Brewers’ Chad Patrick fans career best 9 batters in loss to Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped the series opener at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night by a score of 5-4. On paper, starter Chad Patrick had a career best night in regard to strikeouts, but was responsible for all four runs that the Pirates scored. Here, we take a further look at his performance from Monday night as well as his role with the team going forward.

Brewers rookie pitcher Chad Patrick had mixed results on Monday night against the Pirates. Over five innings pitched he surrendered four earned runs, two of which came off of a Tommy Pham two run home run. His first run allowed came during the opening inning when centerfielder Jackson Chourio went for a diving catch, but missed and was unable to even knock the ball down. As a result, a Pirates runner went from first to home.

On the flip side, Patrick did strike out a career best nine batters. The rookie, who leads all of Major League Baseball in strikeouts off the cut fastball, got seven of his 14 whiffs with the cut fastball against Pittsburgh. His sinker and four-seam fastball did most of the work in the put away department in this game, as just two of his nine strikeouts in this game were off the cut fastball.

The Milwaukee Brewers will face a tough decision regarding Chad Patrick in the near future

With Brandon Woodruff once again having a plan for when he could return to the big leagues, Patrick may find himself as the odd man out of the starting rotation once the veteran right-hander finally makes his much anticipated 2025 season debut. A few weeks ago, taking Patrick out might have been out of the question, but since the calendar flipped to June he has seen his ERA rise from 2.97 to 3.72 over four starts, which includes 14 earned runs.

It will be interesting to see what happens once Woodruff does return, but given the fact Patrick has struggled over the last month, he has minor league options, and Jacob Misiorowski has taken the league by storm, it appears that he may be the odd man out.
