Report: Man Utd want£51m Andre Onana upgrade that Bruno Fernandes loves, he could become the'best in the world'

Andre Onana’s future is far from safe at Old Trafford if the past week is anything to go by at Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim wants several additions through the Carrington doors this summer, but Ineos doesn’t have the budget to do everything at once.

Despite Manchester United spending big on the attack, £62.5m on Matheus Cunha and £60m+ on Bryan Mbeumo, these deals are thought to have consumed the majority of the budget.

United don’t have an unlimited cash reserve to spend over the odds on players, and will need to sell in order to strengthen elsewhere.

In addition to the two number 10 signings, United will want a striker, a midfielder, and a goalkeeper. This is despite United planning to keep Andre Onana at the moment, with several goalkeepers linked with an Old Trafford move in the past week.

Underwhelming links have seen United credited with Emiliano Martinez interest, as the Aston Villa number one targets a move to the Red Devils. However, a genuine upgrade for Onana has now been linked.

Manchester United very interested in signing Diogo Costa

While Martinez has been the main goalkeeper linked with United over the past week, there have also been mentions of alternatives. Included in this is that United still considers Diogo Costa an option, should Onana be sold.

The Porto shot stopper is a long-term target for United, with Erik ten Hag choosing Onana ahead of him in 2023. Since then, he has continued to improve, and this has sparked renewed interest from Ineos.

This claim comes from A Bola in Portugal, which reports that the Porto captain is now convinced that this summer is the perfect time for him to find a new challenge.

Costa is expected to leave for less than his £64m release clause, with £51m tipped to be enough to tempt the Portuguese side to sell their number one. In this event, United are among the clubs most interested in seizing the opportunity.

United face competition for Costa from Manchester City, but Ineos have already been asked by Amorim for Costa, making him a must-sign if a new goalkeeper becomes feasible.

Costa wants to play in the Premier League, and so it would be a move that works for all if the 25-year-old joins United this summer.

Costa has been compared with Manuel Neuer and would be an immense signing by Ineos to replace the shaky Onana. The best performance Costa has had came in Euro 2024 when Portugal beat Slovenia on penalties.

Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot would be delighted with Diogo Costa signing

Costa, being a Portuguese international, means he would have a good rapport with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot already, while Amorim is also probably a fan.

Costa has been labelled a ‘giant’ by Fernandes for his actions in goal, which are quickly seeing him become among the best around.

Meanwhile, Dalot has tipped Costa to become the world’s best, which speaks to his brilliance.

“Of course, he has been mentioned in the past,” Dalot adds. “Not only [with regards to Man United], but also with several major European clubs.

“I have no doubt that he has the potential to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. I maintain my opinion; he is already one of the best, but he will certainly be the best. He decides the timing, and he will make his own decisions.

“If he stays his entire career at FC Porto, it will also be good for me, as a Porto fan. But he has more than enough capacity to be one of the best, as he has shown.”
