Nottingham Forest are reportedly plotting an unexpected swoop for seasoned England international Jordan Henderson.

The former captain of Liverpool is currently at Ajax. The player’s name has been on the radar for many clubs, and Ligue 1 side Marseille is also now reported to be watching closely. He has an unusual clause in his contract which allows him to leave Ajax for free if he does so before mid-July. That is something Forest are said to be keen to take advantage of.
The Englishman was just brought back into the national team picture by manager Thomas Tuchel who reported he wants to play at the 2026 World Cup. He could view a Premier League return as the best route back to top form. Forest have secured a place in next season’s UEFA Conference League. They are hoping European football might sway the player to choose them over other clubs.
Rocky Ajax Spell Sparks Exit Rumours
Henderson’s time at Ajax has been far from smooth. He was, in fact, set to leave for Monaco earlier this year on a deal. The agreement was negotiated and agreed to, but Ajax, the active club, simply decided against it. The player was apparently very unhappy with the club’s decision. Such that the player would not wear the captain’s arm band in a Europa League match. He would not celebrate the team’s goal. That was causing doubts that there was a rift.
There were even times he waved goodbye to the fans when he was subbed. That gave all the appearances of a player who was heading for the exit. With his exit clause now public knowledge, the door is wide open for English clubs.
Nottingham Forest aren’t the only ones interested. Sunderland, Henderson’s boyhood club, are also rumoured to be eyeing a reunion after their return to the top flight. Whether Forest can beat the competition remains to be seen. But, their ambition is clear as they look to add experience and leadership to their squad.
