The Minnesota Timberwolves were prepared to break the bank and shoot for Kevin Durant in a blockbuster trade a week ago. The reported package was Rudy Gobert, Donte DiVincenzo, the 17th pick of the 2025 NBA Draft, and either Rob Dillingham or Terrence Shannon Jr.
That was a massive package to send over to the Phoenix Suns for an aging Durant. He might be one of the generation's best players, but it was still an ambitious trade to make, as it sacrificed depth. However, the reported package was inaccurate, according to Timberwolves insider Jon Krawczynski.

It would have been interesting to see Durant play for the Timberwolves, but this package would have ruined the team's depth. Gobert has been a vital part of the Timberwolves as the defensive anchor, while DiVincenzo played an awesome 3-and-D role.
Giving up on Dillingham or Shannon would have also hurt the Timberwolves, as they appear to be future contributors to the team. Fortunately for the Timberwolves and the fans, this offer was not on the table.
The Reported Package Made The Timberwolves Best Choice
When talks about a trade were brewing, the package was reported. It felt like the Timberwolves were taking the biggest swing to get Durant because they were sacrificing players who could contribute.
The Suns would have been happy with that package because they need role players to fit alongside Devin Booker. Gobert and DiVincenzo would have solved a lot of their problems.
When the Timberwolves pulled out of the trade discussions, it was peculiar, but it turns out that this package was untrue. This was based on John Gambadoro's report, which has now been debunked by The Athletic's Timberwolves insider, Jon Krawczynski.
The Timberwolves Must Explore The Market In The Offseason
After missing out on Durant, the Timberwolves must explore the offseason market. There are many available players around the league who can resolve the problems they must address.
Point guard is a position they are looking to address, as Mike Conley Jr.'s age has become an issue. He can still play for the team, but playing him 25+ minutes is worrying, especially in the Playoffs.
Solving the point guard problem and getting more depth in the frontcourt could also help the team. They want to close the gap with the Oklahoma City Thunder, so they must make big moves to keep up.
