Fabrizio Romano has revealed his latest on Darwin Nunez and Napoli.

By now, all Liverpool fans are aware that the Uruguayan’s days at Anfield are numbered.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Reds in 2022 for a club-record £85 million, has struggled to cement his place under manager Arne Slot and is now expected to depart as part of a broader squad overhaul.

He netted just seven goals in 47 appearances across all competitions this past season.

Taking to X, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Liverpool and the Serie A side will have direct contacts today on the deal.

He adds that finances between the two clubs will determine the outcome of this transfer negotiation, as Nunez has already agreed to the move to Naples:

“Understand Napoli and Liverpool will have direct contacts today to discuss conditions of Darwin Núñez deal.”

“Negotiations still at early stages but Napoli had green light from Nunez as revealed in the recent days… and deal depends on financial requests now.”

Offloading Nunez would free a significant wage budget and provide transfer funds to reinvest in a new starting striker.

Liverpool’s interest in targets like Hugo Ekitike and Alexander Isak hinges partly on resolving Nunez’s future.

Jorge Mendes, Nuneez’s co-agent alongside Daniele Piraino, has historically secured lucrative commission structures for clients moving to high-tax jurisdictions such as Serie A.

Mendes may push for elevated signing-on bonuses to offset Italy’s tax rates.

In the transfer roundabout, Napoli may need to secure Victor Osimhen’s exit before officially committing to the Nunez transfer.
