OPINION: West Ham Could Be About To Sign The Wrong Chelsea Goalkeeper

West Ham are “considering a move” for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, according to reports.

In an article about Aaron Ramsdale, The Times mention that the Hammers prefer the Spanish international, which will leave plenty of Hammers supporters worried.

Despite Sanchez being a good shot-stopper, having the highest save % of any Premier League keeper last season, his mistake-laden displays have forced Chelsea into pursuing alternatives.

The Blues have already tried and failed to buy AC Milan no.1 Mike Maignan and they may attempt to sign a another keeper before the end of the summer.

Head coach Enzo Maresca has seemingly lost patience with Sanchez who had the most mistakes leading to goals of any number one in the Premier League during the 2024/25 campaign.

Why do West Ham want Sanchez?

It seems like Graham Potter is the one pushing to sign the 27-year-old, having worked with him before during their spell together at Brighton & Hove Albion.

Even so, Sanchez was a young keeper back then, and he was still learning his trade, and could be forgiven the odd mistake.

Now, in his late twenties, he doesn’t have the same excuse and he is still making similar errors. It appears Potter still believes Sanchez can overcome the flaws in his game.

There is another Chelsea keeper just waiting to be snapped up

Head of Recruitment Kyle Macaulay should be speaking in Potter’s ear to turn his attention towards a different option – Djordje Petrovic.

The Serbian international had a successful spell out on loan at Strasbourg last season but he is not part of Maresca’s plans, having not been selected in Chelsea’s squad for the Club World Cup.

It is believed that Petrovic will be sold if the Blues receive a fee in the region of £25m. That would still make him an expensive purchase for West Ham, but the Irons could table a loan-to-buy offer to see whether such a propsoal would be accepted.
