Micah Richards has backed Rodrygo for a potential summer move to Arsenal, claiming the Real Madrid forward would be a “good fit” for Mikel Arteta’s system as speculation continues to swirl around the Brazilian’s future in Spain.

Arsenal are actively seeking attacking reinforcements following another trophyless campaign under Arteta, and the 24-year-old Rodrygo has emerged as a player of serious interest. The Gunners are said to be confident they can present a sporting project capable of luring the two-time Champions League winner to north London.

Rodrygo found himself slipping down the pecking order under former Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti toward the end of last season, prompting internal doubts about his role at the club. While his outlook has improved somewhat since Xabi Alonso’s arrival at the helm, no long-term assurances have been given regarding his place in the Spaniard’s plans.

Despite ongoing interest from multiple clubs, including teams from the Saudi Pro League, Rodrygo’s representatives have made it clear that no discussions will take place while Madrid compete in the Club World Cup in the United States. However, the situation could evolve quickly in the coming weeks, especially if Madrid receive an offer in the region of €80 million (£67.5 million), a fee they are reportedly willing to consider.

Speaking onThe Rest Is Football podcast, former Manchester City and England defender Micah Richards expressed confidence that a move could materialise.

“I think he could leave in the summer, I really believe he could,” Richards said. “He’s a top player. He’s been linked with Arsenal. I think Rodrygo would fit in really well in Arteta’s system.”

Richards also addressed the inconsistency of Gabriel Martinelli, Arsenal’s current left winger, suggesting the Brazilian hasn’t fully lived up to expectations, an area where Rodrygo could provide a fresh spark.

“Rodrygo said he didn’t want to play on the right, didn’t he? That’s where the frustration is coming from. Everyone wants to play on the left, even though they’re right-footed.”

Rodrygo started Madrid’s Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal but was withdrawn after 65 minutes in a 1-1 draw. He was then an unused substitute in their 3-1 win over Pachuca on Sunday, fueling further questions about his role under Alonso.
