Everton’s recent pursuit of Albert Gudmundsson could see them land the striker that they have needed for years.

The Toffees haven’t had a player break into double figures for league goals in a single season since Richarlison back in 2021/22, but Gudmundsson has proven himself as a capable goalscoring frontman across Serie A stints with both Genoa and Fiorentina.

The Icelandic international is understood to be top of Roma’s summer wishlist, but Everton have had strong hope of a deal due to Gudmundsson’s desire to play in the Premier League.

However, the landscape of their pursuit of the 28-year-old now looks to have changed once again.

Fiorentina reach verbal agreement for Gudmundsson

The Friedkin Group have previously been tipped to secure a cut-price deal for Gudmundsson, as they look to supply David Moyes with additional firepower.

MORE TOFFEES STORIES

But now, another club have stolen a march on the Merseysiders. Gudmundsson has spent this season on loan at Fiorentina, and La Viola are now understood to have reached a verbal agreement with Genoa to sign him on a permanent basis, according to Sky Sport journalist Luca Cilli (24 June).

That agreement is believed to be for a fee in the region of £11million, which could seemingly be enough for Fiorentina to retain their loan star from last season.

The Italian giants secured a place in qualifying for the UEFA Conference League this season, and that could serve as an attractive proposition for the striker, despite his previous desire to move to England.

Everton should accept defeat

Moyes will be desperate to bring in fresh additions as he looks to continue the Toffees’ impressive rise up the table next term, but it feels like Everton could be better served spending their money elsewhere, rather than trying to hijack Fiorentina’s move for Gudmundsson.

Beto could be on his way out the door, meaning the club will surely need to bring in reinforcements at the top of the pitch, but they should be looking at alternative options to the Icelandic star.

Season Club Apps Goals Assists

2024/25 Fiorentina 24 6 1

2023/24 Genoa 35 14 4

2022/23 Genoa 36 11 4

Albert Gudmundsson’s last three Serie A seasons.

Gudmundsson struck just six league goals for Fiorentina during his loan stint, and although he has more impressive goal returns previously for Genoa, at 28, there is little scope for him to continue developing as a player.

Moyes would surely love to bring in a frontman who is a constant goal threat to opposition sides, and unfortunately, it doesn’t look as though Gudmundsson could provide that.
