Dan Burn is believed to be one of the "leaders" that Thomas Tuchel has in his mind ahead of next summer's World Cup.

Burn's journey from Blyth youngster to Darlington via clubs like Yeovil, Fulham, Birmingham then on to Brighton and Newcastle is the stuff of dreams.

Youngsters in the area idolise the towering defender who headed home at Wembley in the Carabao Cup final to write his name into Geordie folklore and eclipse some of the biggest names in Newcastle history!

It is a journey that has bordered from the sublime to the ridiculous at times, but Burn has taken it all very much in his stride. As the booze flowed after the Carabao Cup win over Liverpool, Burn clutched a can of Coca-Cola with his England call-up his only focus.

The Newcastle United defender, alongside Jordan Henderson, are deemed to be among the stars that are expected to be first on the plane to the US, Mexico, or Canada next year if England, as expected, make it to the finals for the 2026 edition of the greatest show on earth.

Burn was in sparkling form yesterday and after being crowned Chronicle Live's player of the season the club have followed suit and named the 6ft 7in warrior as their top man for the 2024/25 campaign.

Burn's journey from a player signed to help Newcastle stay in the Premier League to a trophy winner with the Magpies, Wembley scorer, Toon legend and England international has been nothing short of phenomenal.

And Chronicle Live have reported his story every step of the way, including being in the stands at Wembley for his Three Lions debut back in March when Burn played his part in a 2-0 win over Albania in a World Cup qualifier.

Next season will see Burn start the campaign as one of the first-choice centre-halfs as Newcastle look to return to the Champions League.

But the World Cup will be very much on Burn's mind moving forward, he told the England official matchday programme: "It's always in the back of your mind, but I have had a very up and down career, and I know things can change very quickly. All I can do is keep performing at the level I've been playing at and hopefully the rest will take care of itself.

"The World Cup is close, but in many ways it is still a long way off, so as cliched as it sounds, you just have to take one thing at a time."

Burn avoided the infamous one-cap wonder group by playing the 90 minutes in the nervous 1-0 victory over Andorra in Barcelona earlier this month. He sat out of the friendly defeat against Senegal, but suggestions from within the camp are that if Burn stays fit and in the team at Newcastle he will be helping lead the Three Lions out next summer at the FIFA World Cup.

The summer has offered Burn the chance to catch his breath and look back at the difference between his first and second caps. The Blyth lad said: "The first one was huge and it all happened so quickly, it's something I will never forget.

"Getting that call to say I'd made it and then seeing how happy everyone was around me was amazing. The second one was wasn't quite as emotional from the perspective but you still need to prepare yourself mentally.

"I think because you know what to expect the second time around it feels like more a case of right let's go."
