Released PL star could now be on his way to Leeds United after Fabrizio Romano's Everton update - opinion

Leeds United have been linked with a move for experienced Premier League right-back Vladimir Coufal this summer, ahead of the Czech star leaving West Ham.

Vladimir Coufal and West Ham will part ways after five years this summer. The 55-cap Czech international is set to be released and there seems to be no shortage of interest in a potential deal for the right-back.

Leeds United are among the teams interested in Coufal this summer. Daniel Farke is in dire need of full-backs after seeing Junior Firpo agree a deal to join Real Betis as a free agent, whilst Sam Byram is stalling on signing a new Leeds contract, or so it seems.

Whilst Farke still has Jayden Bogle and possibly Isaac Schmidt in the right-back position, Coufal is someone who could come in and provide both cover and experience in that position, with Leeds United keen to sign Premier League-experienced players this summer.

But the Whites aren’t alone in their pursuit of Coufal, with a couple of Premier League rivals also rumoured to be in the race for the Hammers veteran.

Leeds United handed major boost in race to sign Vladimir Coufal

The 32-year-old Coufal is a target for Leeds United, Everton and Wolves this summer, according to reports. And it was then suggested that Coufal wanted to join Everton this summer, to reunite with his former West Ham boss David Moyes on Merseyside.

But Farke looks as though he’s now been given a major boost in the pursuit of Coufal after Fabrizio Romano confirmed on X that Everton are set to sign Fulham right-back Kenny Tete on a free transfer this summer. Romano says that Tete and the Toffees have ‘reached verbal agreement’ and it might well end Moyes’ pursuit of Coufal this summer.

Last season, Coufal played 22 times in the Premier League for West Ham as they finished the season in 14th place of the table: an overall very mixed season for the Hammers.

Did Vladimir Coufal ever play at left-back for West Ham?

Coufal is about as experienced as they come. In his five years at West Ham he made 180 total appearances for the club, failing to score but claiming 20 assists for the Hammers.

He leaves as a fan favourite and as someone tried and tested in the Premier League, so it’s no surprise to see Leeds and Wolves both linked with a move.

But Coufal is purely a right-back. Per Transfermarkt, he’s only ever played one game at left-back in his entire career, and only three in the centre-back position. Whilst these figures should be taken with a pinch of salt, Farke might want to consider someone more versatile.

Stat (Premier League) Coufal at West Ham

Games 147

Wins 55

Losses 58

Clean sheets 19

Assists 19

Tackle success 56%

The left-back position in particular is extremely thin on the ground right now and Farke should perhaps place more attention on finding a couple of players for that position before bolstering a right-back position with two names there already.

Nevertheless, Coufal could prove to be a very useful signing for Leeds United if they can pull off a deal this summer.
