NEWCASTLE UNITED have had a formal offer worth around £45m rejected for Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga.

The Magpies failed in an attempt to sign Elanga on deadline day last summer, but retain a strong interest in the 23-year-old Sweden international.

With another of their targets, Bryan Mbeumo, on the verge of joining Manchester United, Newcastle’s recruitment turned their attention back to Elanga and tabled another formal bid this afternoon.

The Magpies’ offer is understood to have involved a total package worth around £45m, the majority of which would have been paid in an up-front fee.

However, Forest officials rejected the offer shortly after it was received. The City Ground club would ideally like to retain Elanga this summer, and if they are to sell, there is a strong determination to accept no less than £60m for a player who is contracted to the summer of 2028.

Newcastle are determined to sign a new right-sided attacker this summer, with Brighton’s Joao Pedro an alternative option. The Magpies are also understood to have alternative targets for the position who have not been publicly discussed.
