Leon Goretzka finally addresses Manchester United rumours as Bayern teammate faces contract uncertainty

Bayern Munich’s coffers have enjoyed a modest swell from their opening performances in the Club World Cup.

Wins against Auckland City and Boca Juniors have seen the Bavarians already pocket €3.5m [£3m] and a further €6.7m [£5.8m] for securing passage to the Round of 16.

Regardless, Max Eberl’s priority remains relatively unchanged: FC Bayern must sell before they can make any moves in the market.

The Bundesliga champions already have a number of names in mind to support this objective, including the likes of Raphaël Guerreiro, Kim Min-jae and João Palhinha.

Leon Goretzka is another fringe star who has found himself often linked with a move away from the German top-flight.

Still, the midfielder, to his immense credit, battled hard in 2024/25 to prove his worth to new boss Vincent Kompany.

In fact, the 30-year-old played 41 games in all competitions for Bayern Munich last term, picking up the 12th most minutes in the squad.

I asked Goretzka on Monday evening about the rumours of Manchester United’s interest. He said: “I’m very focused on the tournament here and am happy to be at Bayern. I want to help the team next season as well.”

What does the future hold for other Bayern stars?

Bayern are still trying to extend Dayot Upamecano’s contract, which remains set to expire in the summer of 2026. Guerreiro currently faces the same fate.

There has been no word yet about a proposed extension for the Portuguese left-back.

When I discussed the subject with Guerreiro, he told me: “No one from the club has spoken to me yet.

“I feel very comfortable at Bayern at the moment. We have a great team that I want to be a part of. So I would like to continue here.”

The fullback is also aiming for a comeback with the Portuguese national team: “I spoke to the coach because I’ve had a lot of injuries in my career and needed the break.

“I will talk to him again before the next call-up because I want to return to the national team.”
