The Giants are rolling into the 2025 season with a packed quarterback room, led by Russell Wilson, rookie Jaxson Dart, Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito. At least one of these signal callers will find themselves on the chopping block by September (likely DeVito).
But Fox Sports analyst Mark Schlereth wants the team to make a more drastic change.
The former NFL player said this week that the Giants should do the unthinkable and cut Wilson, whom coach Brian Daboll already named this season’s starter.
Schlereth explained his reasoning on the “Breakfast Ball” show on FS1 Monday:
“The Giants should cut Russell Wilson and start Jaxson Dart,” Schlereth said via the “Breakfast Ball” show on FS1. “I’ll take this from the perspective of what went down in Denver just a year ago. In Denver, they had Russell Wilson. They moved on from Russell Wilson. Russell, he has a propensity to take way too many sacks, not throw the ball in the middle of the football field (and) all these different things.
“They draft a rookie quarterback, and everybody said, ‘Oh, the roster is not very good. The roster is the 31st-ranked roster in all of football. Oh, it’s a quarterback who, yeah, he may be smart, but he lacks a big-time arm talent and lacks the athleticism, or can’t feel all these different things.’ And the bottom line, there was a struggle for three or four games.
“He wasn’t great right out of the gate, but then he became the second-highest touchdown quarterback as a rookie next to Justin Herbert. He threw 29 touchdowns last year. Almost threw for 4,000 yards last year.
“You start your rookie and you go with the growing pains and you understand that you’re not going to the playoffs right now,” Schlereth added*. “You do have a great defense, which is one of the best things you can give a young quarterback is a great defense. I think it’s just time to rip off the Band-Aid and say, ‘Jaxson Dart, you’re our guy.’”*
Yeah, this obviously isn’t going to happen. Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are desperately trying to win in 2025 after a dismal 3-14 season and Wilson, 36, gives them the best chance to do that (at least early on).
Dart will likely take the starting reins later this season, but the odds of him being the Week 1 starter are very slim.
