‘Indeed…’ - Luke Edwards says Newcastle now eyeing move for ‘one of the best young players in…

Newcastle United are keen on a deal to sign Atalanta star Giorgio Scalvini this summer, according to journalist Luke Edwards.

The Magpies are looking to build up their squad after a successful 2024/25 season in which they ended a 70-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup, before qualifying for the 2025/26 Champions League group stages after finishing 5th in the Premier League.

The centre-back position is one that Eddie Howe is keen to add to with Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman dealing with injury problems throughout the last campaign, while Dan Burn and Fabian Schar are both the wrong side of 30. Now Scalvini has emerged as a potential target.

Only interest as things stand

Reports in Italy have suggested that Scalvini, who has been described as 'one of the best young defenders in the world', has now emerged as a target for the Toon.

Atalanta have recently parted ways with long-time manager Gian Piero Gasperini and replaced him with Ivan Juric, which has led to speculation about several of their top stars, including Scalvini. The Italian defender, who can also play in midfield, hasn't played since January due to a shoulder injury.

He also recently recovered from a serious knee problem, and according to Edwards, those injury problems are one reason why Newcastle's interest hasn't progressed into anything more concrete as things stand.

Scalvini is considered to be 'one to watch' by The Telegraph's main man for Newcastle news, however, and that is something to pay attention to in the coming weeks.

Howe is also keen to add to the attack, with Brighton star Joao Pedro considered to be the top target with talks advancing between the clubs, while Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford is also someone the club are very keen to sign.
