How a£60m Bryan Mbeumo deal will impact Man United's PSR as new wage claim made

Manchester United are waiting to hear back about their second bid for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo.

After confirming the arrival of Matheus Cunha in a £62.5m deal from Wolves, Manchester United quickly set their sights on signing Bryan Mbeumo.

An initial £45m +£10m bid for Mbeumo was rejected by Brentford, but Ineos continued to negotiate before presenting another offer.

United’s second bid for Mbeumo is worth over £60m, which matches Brentford’s valuation of the 25-year-old. If accepted, fans could see Mbeumo holding a United shirt within days.

Despite reports that United were close to their PSR limit, a deal for Mbeumo would take the total spend this summer to north of £120m already.

Man United’s PSR standings after Bryan Mbeumo deal

There were reports that United would only have a £100m budget this summer, which may have a few fans scratching their heads around how the Mbeumo deal can be afforded.

However, finance expert Kieran Maguire explained United can continue spending this summer as their PSR situation was not as bleak as first imagined.

Through amortisation, United can continue to spread the cost of their transfer signings over multiple years from a PSR perspective.

The Premier League allows clubs to amortise transfer fees over a maximum of five years (provided their contract is long enough).

Therefore a £60m deal for Mbeumo would only inflict a £12m dent on United’s PSR standings each year for the next five years.

Since the Ineos takeover, every signing made so far has signed a five-year contract, meaning United can maximise the spread of their fees.

United’s takeover costs were excluded from PSR following an agreement with the Premier League. It has given the club much more flexibility in the transfer window.

Bryan Mbeumo’s wages at Man United amid new claim

While adding high-profile signings to the squad, it is important that Ineos keep to their wage structure to keep United financially sustainable.

With Cunha set to earn £200,000 per week at United, it was always expected that a similar salary would be given to Mbeumo.

Personal terms for the winger are not expected to be an issue and while reports claimed Mbeumo could earn up to £250,000 per week at United, a new claim suggests the figure will be lower.

The Guardian report that Mbeumo can expect to earn around £150,000 per week on his United contract – the same region as fellow signing Cunha.

That would rank Mbeumo eighth on the list of United’s highest earners, matching the salary paid out to Luke Shaw.
