Aaron Rodgers hints at his NFL career ending soon

The New York Jets were ready to move on from Aaron Rodgers back in March when they released the future first-ballot Hall of Famer from their roster. Roughly three months went by before he finally signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

So, what took so long? While it may or may not be true that he got married, possibly using the time off to spend time with his new spouse, maybe the 41-year-old was seriously pondering retirement.

While we may not know what took Rodgers so long to announce his decision for the 2025 NFL season, we now have a better idea on his future.

On Tuesday, Rodgers made another appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, where he admitted that the upcoming year is likely his final season in the NFL. If so, Rodgers would end with 21 seasons played in the NFL.

“I’m pretty sure this is it. That’s why we just did a one-year deal — Steelers didn’t need to put any extra years on that or anything. This was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I’ve had. I mean, I’ve played freaking 20 years, you know? It’s been a long run, and I’ve enjoyed it. What better to place to finish than in one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL with Mike Tomlin and a great group of leadership and great guys and a city that expects you to win.”

Aaron Rodgers on his NFL future

Of course, Rodgers could easily change his mind after spending a season in Pittsburgh. If he comes close to another Super Bowl victory, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Rodgers walks away from the game he loves, yet other factors could come into play too.
