Man United are looking to sell several players this summer in order to help rebuild Ruben Amorim’s squad.
Manchester United are having to be shrewd in the transfer market this summer as they don’t have a lot of transfer budget to play with, especially with regards to Profitability and Sustainability Rules.
Chelsea and Man United considering swap for Christopher Nkunku
With Garnacho the offer from United, a deal between the Red Devils and Chelsea would see attacker Christopher Nkunku come to Old Trafford, as the Frenchman’s future is uncertain at the moment as he fell out of favour with Enzo Maresca last season.
According to a report by the Telegraph, Chelsea and United are ‘weighing up’ whether it would be a beneficial deal to swap Garnacho and Nkunku. It does say that it would not be a formal swap deal, rather two individual deals, but just for accounting purposes.
The report says that there has been no talks regarding the deal yet, just that both clubs are considering it as an option. If United were to bring in Nkunku, he would provide Amorim with another player who can shine in a number 10 role after they signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves earlier in the window.
Nkunku was linked to United in January. He made 43 appearances for Chelsea last season, scoring 14 goals and providing five assists. However, these were mainly in cup competitions and Europe, as Nicolas Jackson was preferred over him in the Premier League. The Blues signed Nkunku from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for £51m in July 2023. He has since made 57 appearances for the club, scoring 17 goals and providing five assists.
Now that Chelsea signed Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, they have less of a need for Nkunku, and so could swap him for Garnacho. The Blues are looking to sign a winger, and Garnacho would be a credible option, considering that their initial attempts to sign Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund were rejected.
Man United and Chelsea swap could depend on Bryan Mbeumo deal
If their £60m bid is accepted, Man United would likely cool their interest in Nkunku seeing as they will have less of a need at the number 10 position. They already have Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, and Mason Mount, and bringing in Mbeumo would only crowd the position even further.
It is not yet understood as to whether Brentford will accept Man United’s deal for Mbeumo, however, the player certainly wants to join the Red Devils despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur and his former boss Thomas Frank.
