The Kansas City Chiefs and the other 31 NFL teams [are on summer break ahead of training camp](https://kckingdom.com/former-chiefs-qb-on-thin-ice-after-offseason-workouts-01jyexx5wyyw), which starts on July 21 for last season's Super Bowl runners-up.
The Chiefs had OTAs wrap up on June 13, while mandatory minicamp ended about a week later. The pause in action allows Kansas City fans to check in on some of the franchise's former players, including an ex-Chiefs quarterback who might be on the verge of retirement.
Formers Chiefs QB Blaine Gabbert Could Be on Verge of Retirement
----------------------------------------------------------------
Former Chiefs signal-caller Blaine Gabbert is still a free agent at the end of June, and at 35 years old, his time could be ticking.
Gabbert spent the 2023 season as Patrick Mahomes' backup. Thankfully, Mahomes was able to stay healthy, and the former Missouri product appeared in just one game. In that outing, he was 18-of-35 for 185 passing yards with three interceptions.
Gabbert entered the league as the 10th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Missouri native has spent time with the Jaguars, Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, Tennessee Titans, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Over his 12-year career, he managed to secure two Super Bowl championships (55 & 58). Despite being a valuable asset in a quarterback room due to his experience playing in the NFL, learning different offensive schemes, he's [been on the open market for the last two offseasons](https://kckingdom.com/posts/4-former-chiefs-still-unemployed-entering-training-camp-01j2kxjp700c/2).
It doesn't look like anyone is jumping at the opportunity to sign Gabbert, and that could be a sign that he's inching closer to retirement. Whether that's what he wants remains to be seen, but after a while of being a free agent, there aren't many other options.
It'll be interesting to see if he lands a job in the next few weeks to be a camp arm. If that isn't the case, he'll finish his NFL career with 69 games (49 starts) under his belt. In those outings, he went 882-of-1568 (56.3%) for 9,487 passing yards, 51 passing touchdowns, 50 interceptions, and a 71.7 passer rating.
Gabbert is clearly looking to land one more gig, but with how things are set up, the 35-year-old might be hanging up his cleats before summer is over.
