Journalist shares the one thing about Florian Wirtz that ‘nobody’ at Liverpool is willing to talk about now

Florian Wirtz made history last week as he became the most expensive player in the club’s history.

Indeed, Florian Wirtz has joined Liverpool in a deal that could ultimately end up being worth £116m – a club-record transfer.

Liverpool have secured a brilliant signing here in the eyes of many, and it will be interesting to see how Wirtz operates in this team.

Wirtz is a classic number 10, but, as we saw last season, that isn’t necessarily a role that fits into Arne Slot’s style of play.

Speaking to Sports Mole, David Lynch has been discussing where Wirtz will play at Liverpool, and, interestingly, the journalist says that’s one thing that nobody within Liverpool is willing to speak about.

Liverpool keeping Florian Wirtz plans quiet

Lynch spoke about where Wirtz could play for Liverpool and what he’s been able to gather from his sources.

Intriguingly, the reporter says nobody at Liverpool is willing to talk about the plan with Wirtz at the moment.

“I’m very interested to see what the Wirtz role is, he could be the centre-forward in a sense. I wonder if as a false nine is the area you see him operate in?” Lynch suggested.

“He’s not bad defensively Wirtz, but he doesn’t have the engine of Szoboszlai. I have this idea that Wirtz may be in that false nine role. That’s just speculation from me by the way. Nobody at Liverpool will talk about the ideas for him, so it’s hard to deduce those ideas at the moment.”

Florian Wirtz stats in different positions

Wirtz has played in numerous positions during his career, but he has mostly been deployed as an attacking midfield player.

That said, he has had a few outings as a deeper-lying striker and he has thrived in those situations in the past.

Florian Wirtz positions Games Goals Assists

Attacking midfield 159 48 54

Centre-forward 11 4 4

Right wing 11 4 3

Left wing 9 2 3

Centre midfield 5 0 3

Second striker 4 3 3

Of course, it’s a small sample size, but six goal contributions in four games as a second-striker is a great return, and it shows what he could potentially do in this false nine role at Liverpool.

It remains to be seen what sort of role Wirtz will play at Liverpool, but it certainly won’t hurt the Reds to have a player who is so versatile in their attack next season.
