Matisse Thybulle returns to Blazers for one more year

Matisse Thybulle exercised his $11.55M player option for the 2025–26 season, remaining with the Trail Blazers.

Defensive specialist Matisse Thybulle is staying in Portland for at least one more year. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Thybulle has exercised his $11.55 million player option for the 2025–26 NBA season, choosing stability with the Trail Blazers over free agency this summer.

The 28-year-old guard/forward would have hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent, but instead will remain under contract through next season unless he and Portland agree to a contract extension beforehand.

Thybulle entered the NBA in 2019 as a first-round pick by the Philadelphia 76ers, where he quickly made his mark with elite perimeter defense. He earned NBA All-Defensive Second Team honors in both 2021 and 2022, averaging over a block and more than 1.5 steals per game during that span—an impressive feat for a wing player.

However, his offensive limitations and shrinking role led to a midseason trade to Portland during the 2022–23 season. His minutes jumped from 12.1 per game with the Sixers to 27.7 per game with the Blazers, a significant boost that revitalized his production.

Thybulle struggled with injuries throughout the 2024-25 campaign, not making his season debut until March and appearing in just 15 games total. He averaged 7.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game, contributing primarily on defense in a limited bench role.
