Man United and Chelsea are both keen to replace their current goalkeepers this summer.
However, Martinez isn’t the only goalkeeper that the Red Devils have been linked to this summer; they have also emerged as a contender to sign a La Liga star, who could be available in the transfer market this summer.
Man United and Chelsea want to sign Marc-Andre Ter Stegen
On top of interest in Martinez from Villa, Man United have now emerged as contenders to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who’s future is in doubt after the La Liga giants signed Espanyol keeper Joan Garcia for a fee of £21.3m. Ter Stegen is now a candidate to leave Barca after a spell of 11 years with the club.
In those 11 years, Ter Stegen has won a Champions League title, and also six La Liga titles. He’s made over 420 appearances for the Spanish side, conceding 416 goals and keeping an impressive 175 clean sheets.
However, following the signing of Garcia, Ter Stegen is expected to leave this summer, and according to Spanish outlet Fichajes, both Chelsea and Man United are keen to sign him, as they look to replace Andre Onana and Robert Sanchez.
The report describes the two Premier League rivals as ‘serious contenders’ to sign Ter Stegen, who has an estimated market value of £10m, so he could be an even cheaper, yet more experienced alternative to Martinez, who’s price could be driven up if Villa are reluctant to let him leave for a Premier League rival.
There has been no suggestion of a concrete move for Ter Stegen from either United or Chelsea, but if one makes a move, the other could strike into action, which could either cause a bidding war, or a decision for the 33-year-old in terms of which club he would rather join.
Man United also considering Serie A star
Martinez and Ter Stegen are both well-established, and experienced goalkeepers, however the biggest issue with signing them is that they are not long-term solutions, being 32 and 33 respectively.
Carnesecchi kept 18 clean sheets in 44 appearances for Atalanta last season, he has also broken out into the Italy national team in recent months, becoming one of the most exciting keeper talents in world football.
Although he was valued at £55m in January, and so would be a much more expensive alternative compared to one of Martinez or Ter Stegen.
