Arsenal consider Sevilla midfielder as Partey replacement

Arsenal are discussing potential replacements for Thomas Partey, with Sevilla’s Lucien Agoume one of the names reportedly under consideration.

James McNicholas reports for The Athletic that if Thomas Partey leaves Arsenal at the end of his contract next Monday, the Gunners are aware they will have to replace him.

Though Martin Zubimendi is joining the club in the same position, Jorginho has already left, so another player departing would mean another addition was necessary.

McNicholas writes that Arsenal are discussing potential alternatives, and one of the names on their shortlist is Sevilla midfielder Lucien Agoume.

Sevilla-based journalist Maximo de la Cruz Ramirez Ramirez reported earlier this month that Arsenal were monitoring Agoume’s situation, though he added that there hadn’t yet been any contact between player and club.

The same reporter confirmed on Tuesday that there still haven’t been any talks between the two parties, though perhaps that makes sense whilst Partey’s situation is still uncertain.

Agoume’s situation is somewhat complicated by the fact Sevilla only own 50% of his rights, spending €4m for the privilege last summer. As a result, they’d need an offer above €10m (£8.5m) to make a profit.

The midfielder has a €40m (£34.1m) release clause, so he should cost somewhere in the range of those two figures.

Arsenal have also today been linked with Brentford’s Christian Norgaard as a potential Partey replacement, so the club have options.

Agoume made 37 appearances for Sevilla last season, and he also played regularly for the France u21s. He’s currently with the French youth side at the u21 Euros, reaching the semi-finals.
