Arsenal have opened talks to sign highly-rated Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, with the player’s agent recently spotted in London, according to Italian journalist Gianluigi Longari.

The Gunners are yet to announce a new signing in the current transfer window but continue to work diligently behind the scenes. According to The Athletic, Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is expected at London Colney this week to finalise a £5 million move to the Emirates. Meanwhile, a deal for Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi is also said to be progressing, with completion anticipated in the coming weeks.

Now, Arsenal have turned their attention to bolstering their defence, with 19-year-old Hato emerging as a top target. The Dutch youngster, capable of playing both centre-back and left-back, has drawn widespread admiration for his maturity, composure, and technical quality.

Longari reports that Hato’s agent has been in London in recent days to advance discussions, as Arsenal aim to beat Premier League rivals Chelsea in the race for the Netherlands international. The Gunners are believed to have already tabled a six-year contract for the defender as they look to secure one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

While Hato is keen on a move to the Premier League, a key factor in his decision will be the prospect of regular playing time. At Arsenal, he would face stiff competition from the likes of Gabriel Magalhães, Riccardo Calafiori, Jakub Kiwior and academy talent Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has impressed in defensive roles.

Hato has been described as a “world-class” prospect and is regarded as one of Ajax’s most promising graduates in recent years. With several top clubs monitoring his situation, Arsenal are eager to move quickly and decisively.

Adding a new forward remains another key objective for Mikel Arteta’s side this summer, but the club’s interest in Hato underlines their intent to future-proof the defence as they prepare for another title challenge in the 2025–26 campaign.
