Former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom has thrown his support behind Sporting CP star Viktor Gyokeres, backing the prolific Swedish forward as the ideal spearhead for the Gunners’ attack next season.

Speaking in a recent interview with content creator Dylan White, Akpom unveiled his dream front three for Arsenal, placing Gyokeres centrally alongside Real Madrid’s Rodrygo on the left and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka on the right.

“I would love Rodrygo on the left, Gyokeres up top, and Saka on the right. That front three is deadly, we don’t need any other player,” Akpom said, sparking excitement among Arsenal fans eager to see a revamped frontline following another close Premier League title race.

Akpom, who came through Arsenal’s Hale End academy and enjoyed a breakout campaign with Middlesbrough in 2022/23, is no stranger to Gyokeres. Having faced him in the Championship, Akpom had high praise for the 27-year-old, especially when comparing him to another Arsenal target, RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko.

“It’s not even close, to be honest,” Akpom said. “Gyokeres is ready now.”

Gyokeres has been sensational since moving to Portugal, netting 54 goals in 52 appearances last season and guiding Sporting CP to a domestic double. His blistering form has attracted interest from several top European clubs, but Arsenal are reportedly leading the race for his signature. According to reports, the striker is keen to make the switch to North London and has even considered drastic measures, such as refusing to train, to push through the move.

Akpom believes Gyokeres’ ability to make an immediate impact makes him the perfect fit for Mikel Arteta’s side. “I played against him when he was at Coventry, and you could see his quality even then,” Akpom recalled. “He’s only gotten better since moving to Portugal.”

However, assembling Akpom’s dream trio will be no easy task. Rodrygo remains a key player for Real Madrid and would command a substantial fee, while Sporting are standing firm on Gyokeres’ £84 million release clause. Arsenal also face competition from Manchester United and Juventus, though the player has reportedly turned down the Italian giants in favour of a move to the Emirates.

With Arsenal’s pre-season tour of Asia fast approaching, pressure is mounting on the club to secure a top striker and Gyokeres appears to be the frontrunner.
