The Sacramento Kings brought in Wisconsin guard John Tonje for a pre-draft workout ahead of the 2025 NBA Draft. Could he be an ideal selection for their 42nd pick?
Sacramento enters this week’s NBA Draft in possession of the 42nd overall pick, although they have been widely rumored to be seeking a jump into the first round before Wednesday night’s action gets underway at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
It’s no secret that new general manager Scott Perry will be looking to acquire a point guard this summer, and while it’s unlikely he will find a starting guard for this roster in the second round of the draft, Tonje could be an intriguing player to add to this team that could always use more three-point shooting and rebounding.

2025 NBA Draft profile: John Tonje | Wisconsin | SG

Scouting report via NBA Draft Room
John Tonje is a talented shot-maker and overall scorer. He is very efficient with his touches, shows good shot selection, and can really shoot the ball.
Has a consistent and smooth shooting stroke and is always a threat from the 3pt range.
Has good strength and enough athleticism.
Plays a good team game. A solid help defender and good rebounder for a guard. He isn’t much of a playmaker on defense, but gives good effort and isn’t a liability on that end.
John Tonje is an older prospect who looks very NBA-ready and could fill a role off an NBA bench.
Does John Tonje make sense for the Sacramento Kings?
If the Kings hold onto the 42nd pick, drafting John Tonje is a move that could bring Sacramento an offensively gifted prospect who fits the roster’s needs from an age standpoint.
Tonje, who will turn 25 years old next April, is seen as a prospect who could contribute to an NBA team sooner rather than later, thanks to his age and lengthy experience in college.
The 2024-25 All-Big Ten First Team guard ranked fourth in the conference in points per game (19.6) and was top-30 in rebounding–even as a guard.

NBA Drafts are typically hard to predict, but in the Sacramento Kings’ case this year, it’s nearly impossible. What does the NBA Mock Draft landscape think of the Kings’ plans for the 42nd pick?
Sacramento will enter the two-day 2025 NBA Draft on June 25-26 without a first-round pick as it searches for answers to salvaging its current roster. The Kings’ first-round selection was conveyed to Atlanta as part of the 2022 trade that brought Kevin Huerter to the team.
Last year, Sacramento had plenty of prep work to do as they held the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Following a lengthy pre-draft workout and interview process, they landed on Providence guard Devin Carter, who spent most of his rookie season dealing with his recovery and rehab from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
This year, the Kings hold one draft pick–the 42nd overall pick–in the second round, although they could look to move up on draft day.
