Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta are being beaten to transfer targets by European rivals.
Arsenal risk seeing prime transfer options snapped up by rivals with the number of targets available to sporting director Andrea Berta ‘diminishing’.
Arsenal transfer targets ‘diminishing’
It’s important for the Gunners to strengthen early in the summer to allow Arteta to work with his new arrivals before a tricky start to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign. Arsenal will travel to Old Trafford, Anfield and St. James’ Park before the end of September.
In his latest Transfer DealSheet for The Athletic, Ornstein provided a round-up of players still on the club’s shopping list but admitted that ‘the pool of options is diminishing’. Dean Huijsen has opted to join Real Madrid already with Bryan Mbeumo and Nico Williams both wanted, but supposedly destined for Manchester United and Barcelona. Meanwhile, Leroy Sane appears ready to join Galatasaray.
Ornstein names Kepa Arrizabalaga as a more realistic target with the Chelsea shot-stopper supposedly due at Colney to tie up a £5 million deal this week. The goalkeeper will provide competition for David Raya between the sticks.
Mikel Arteta: ‘We need transfers’
It is indeed Sesko and Gyokeres who are named as potential forward signings with Real Madrid man Rodrygo and Newcastle United talent Anthony Gordon potential options to reinforce the flanks.
Speaking about the club’s need for transfers at the end of last season, Arteta said: "We need that, for sure. With the numbers that we started the season and [the numbers] to provide for next season, with the demands we're going to have and especially with the players that we have who are coming through long-term surgeries, it's very unrealistic [to deliver trophies].
"We know that, we have to address that and we're going to do everything we can to improve it. Especially because we are going to lose quite a lot of players. There are players out of contract, there are players who have come here on loan.
"So the squad becomes really thin on top of the injuries that we have. We know we have that duty, that necessity and we have players in the academy that can help. Great, but if not we know what we have to do."
