Newcastle United are eyeing a deal for Anthony Elanga - and rumours of a Harvey Barnes exit continue this summer.
We all knew he was No.1 right wing target - and finally Newcastle United have struck.
The Magpies have made their move for Nottingham Forest wideman Anthony Elanga. According to reports, the club has seen a bid of around £45million rejected by the Europa League outfit. It’s unclear whether the Magpies will up their bid, but they are faced with reluctant sellers in Forest, who stood firm amid United bids and interest last summer - and did so again when other clubs enquired in the January window.
One suggestion floated by some outlets is including Harvey Barnes in any deal, much like they offered Miguel Almiron last summer. And we floated the idea on our Newcastle United Facebook page this week.
It’s fair to say the suggestion did not go down too well - with fans keen to hang on to Barnes, who was the Magpies’ second top scorer last season with nine goals. The player also enjoyed an end of season run of consistency off the left, with Anthony Gordon unable to dislodge the former Leicester City man in the final weeks of the campaign.
What fans think of Harvey Barnes transfer
Michael Mcdougall: “What would be the point in that making the team weaker to add a winger.”
Fred Hurst: “100% No I wouldn’t. We need strength and depth for the champions league. I will just sit back and see what EH does and give him my full backing instead reading all the posts out there about who we should or might sign.”
Demba Gaye: “Barnes is great player.”
Rachel Horne: “No, unfortunately certain sections of the media keep recycling the same stories, irrespective of whether there is any supporting evidence or not. Whilst this approach also affects other clubs, it does appear to be more prominent when Newcastle is the focal point.”
Brian Appleby: “No Barnes is too good to let go.”
Bass Falconer: “Keep him he will only get even better.”
Trev Reed: “Why would you get rid of a top player.”
Stef Alexander: “No. We need to keep hold of him!!!”
Robert Syrett: “No. We need strength in depth. Stupid idea.”
Jeremy Walker: “No. We are trying to build a squad, not dismantle it.”
Craig Smith: “Keep Barnes. We can just buy Elanga for 50m and have the cost spread over the term of his contract so it's only 10m a year for PSR if it is such a massive issue.”
Tedd Sloan: “Definitely not we need him for next season would be stupidity to let him go.”
Darren Button: “So we need to sell a left winger to sign a 2nd right winger to only leave us with one left winger... what happened to this 250m to spend. spent nothing in the last 2 windows.”
