West Ham are eyeing a move for a Liverpool player who could be surplus to requirements next season
West Ham boss Graham Potter reportedly sees Liverpool defender Joe Gomez as a “good option” for his Hammers side but as things stand the former Charlton Athletic man is happy at Anfield and unlikely to leave.
Gomez is entering his 10th year at Liverpool but could be deemed surplus to requirements if Arne Slot opts to add to his options in the centre of defence. Jarell Quansah is poised to leave the Merseyside outfit for Bayer Leverkusen which will leave Liverpool with just three central defenders. Crystal Palace ace Marc Guehi has been linked.
It means that Liverpool would need to add at least two new centre-backs this summer before being open to letting go of Gomez. The club’s former scout, Mick Brown, speaking to Football Insider said that Potter likes Gomez who is also the subject of interest from Leeds United and Everton.
Graham Potter sees Joe Gomez as option for West Ham
Speaking to Football Insider, Brown said: “West Ham aren’t the only interested club, he’s been linked to Everton and Leeds as well. If Liverpool decide to let him go, there will be a lot of clubs looking to bring him in.
“My sources tell me that Potter wants to strengthen at the back, and he sees Gomez as a good option. They’re keeping a close eye on his situation and if he is allowed to leave, I expect they’ll be ready to make a move.”
Gomez has played 241 times for Liverpool since moving from Charlton in July 2015. He has had struggles with injury and spent a large chunk of the most recent campaign sidelined by a hamstring problem that required surgery.
He can play across the back-line with central defence his primary position but he is also reliable at right-back and has been used at left-back a number of times during his time with the Reds.
Joe Gomez gives hint on Liverpool future
Gomez posted on Instagram last week as he approaches his 10-year anniversary at Anfield and indicated he was keen to remain at the club as he “still hungry”. He said: “Ten years ago as a kid moving from south east London to Liverpool, I couldn’t even imagine looking this far into the future.
“Looking back now I’m full of gratitude & take so much pride in being a part of this club and city.
“No denying the challenges along the way, but embracing them to grow as both a player and a person is something I’ve always tried to do & I’m grateful for all the support in trying to do that.
“It’s been a blessing to be a part of the different dressing rooms and getting to create such special memories over the years with so many great players & staff.
“I felt it was important to share my thanks to you all for the support throughout the years, it’s always meant the world and I will never take it for granted.
“A decade in red… and still hungry to keep going.”
