Leicester City should call on Manchester United transfer favour with former captain set for role

Former Leicester City captain Jonny Evans could do the club a transfer favour this summer as he gets set to begin a new role at Manchester United.

Evans’ playing career at Old Trafford ended last month but he looks set to remain at the club in a staff job.

The 37-year-old is reportedly due to take over as a loans manager, looking after the young players in United’s ranks and finding the right clubs to send them to.

City may have to call in a favour with the Northern Irishman when they get down to transfer business this summer.

With budget readjustments needed following their fall into the Championship and with considerations around Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), City may have to utilise the loan market.

They did so during their last Championship campaign, bringing in Abdul Fatawu from Sporting Lisbon, Callum Doyle from Manchester City, Yunus Akgun from Galatasaray, and Cesare Casadei from Chelsea, all on loan.

It’s a cheap way to get talented players through the door and fill gaps in the squad, and it would make sense if it’s market City look to exploit.

While United had a dreadful season by their standards, their academy remains prolific and there will be a handful of players City could look at.

Centre-back Tyler Fredricson, left-back Harry Amass, central midfielder Toby Collyer and striker Chido Obi all played a handful of minutes for United’s first team this past season, but if their transfer business blocks their path, each of them may be best served heading out on loan.

City were linked with Collyer back in January, likely because of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s connections with Old Trafford, but the club were not desperate for a central midfielder at the time, nor did PSR restrictions allow them much wiggle room.

With Boubakary Soumare and Wilfred Ndidi both contenders to leave, and the futures of Harry Winks and Hamza Choudhury uncertain too, City may need to strengthen in the centre of the park.

While sales are required to determine exactly which positions City need to focus on, the spine of the team is likely the priority.

City have already lost their main man up front in Jamie Vardy, and have released a couple of goalkeepers too.

Sales are expected at centre-back and in central midfield, while first-choice attacking midfielder Bilal El Khannouss is expected to generate interest.
