Three players set to leave Leeds United next week with talks on future underway

Two Leeds United players have already left Elland Road but three more are about to be chalked off the books as things stand.

The only squad member to be sold so far is Rasmus Kristensen, whose permanent move to loan club Eintracht Frankfurt went through on the opening day of the window on June 1. His £7.7million package was agreed in April but could not be registered until the transfer market opened.

Following him out of the door is Josuha Guilavogui, who leaves the Whites having been signed on a free back in October. He failed to start any of his 16 Championship appearances but while his on-field impact was minimal, his off-pitch influence was notable.

A popular figure within the dressing room, Guilavogui was known for his happy and passionate attitude - perhaps reflected by his jumping and embracing of manager Daniel Farke upon Pascal Struijk’s dramatic winner against Sunderland.

The France international was known to deliver stirring speeches before games and on occasion posted well-written post-match reflections on social media. It is his exit that will be felt more than Kristensen’s.

But perhaps above all may be the expected departure of Junior Firpo. The 28-year-old has grown into a popular player among fans and his exit would leave a hole to be filled at left-back.

It appears Real Betis are closing in on a return move for the defender, who has been linked with numerous others clubs. Marseille and Lyon are two, though contacts in Italy have thrown cold water over the connections with AC Milan.

Either way, it seems like Betis and their lure of Europa League football are frontrunners to land Firpo, even if United are still in open talks with the player over his future. This time next week, he will no longer be contracted to Leeds barring a late and dramatic U-turn.

His current deal expires on June 30 - as it does for Sam Byram. The academy graduate has told the club he wishes to stay and also remains in contract discussions but there has been no breakthrough as yet.

High-ranking Leeds sources have outlined that each contract is dealt with on a case-by-case basis and deals are made on what is best for the club. So Firpo leaving does not necessarily elevate the chances of Byram staying purely based on finances.

However, situationally, it is clear what gap would be left should Byram leave given he can play in both full-back positions. Byram would not be a starter but questions linger over whether there is enough confidence in Isaac Schmidt to be the de facto back-up.

And there is the issue that both Byram and Firpo would leave for nothing and that replacements for both would be needed - and cost money. All the while, James Debayo has yet to sign the new terms offered to him but last season's debutant is anticipated to sign on the dotted line.

If nothing is signed before next Tuesday then all three players will be classed as free agents and formally off the books of Leeds United. There is always the option United re-sign them after this date, and a lack of agreement before then does not mean they have reached a conclusion in talks.
