Ranking the five favourites to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Viktor Gyokeres is a name that has not been far from the headlines this summer.

The Sporting CP striker is keen to quit the Portuguese champions after a prolific period in the Primeira Liga. Gyokeres has netted 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting, winning back-to-back titles and top scorer awards in Portugal. It’s the sort of goal return that does not go unnoticed with several of Europe’s elite making enquiries in recent months.

Despite an abundance of enquiries and Sporting’s willingness to sell for the right fee, there has been little concrete movement on a transfer to date. In what appears an open race, we’ve looked at how the bookmakers assess the current battle for Gyokeres. Using the latest odds from OddsChecker we’ve ranked the five favourites to sign the Swedish striker.

Ranking the five favourites to sign Viktor Gyokeres

Any Saudi Pro League side – 13/2

Saudi Pro League sides are hardly short of cash and several of the league’s leading sides are interested in Gyokeres. The 27-year-old is understood to want to remain in Europe, but the riches of Saudi Arabia could prove persuasive if no interesting options open up.

Atletico Madrid – 13/2

Atletico Madrid have a long track record of signing strikers from the Primeira Liga.

Radamel Falcao was a huge hit after moving to the Spanish capital from FC Porto, though the previously prolific Jackson Martinez and Joao Felix failed to hit the same heights.

Atleti are understood to be monitoring Gyokeres, as Diego Simeone looks to add another top talent to his forward line. Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth and Antoine Griezmann combined for 70 goals across all competitions last season. The addition of Gyokeres could help the Spaniards close the gap at the top of La Liga.

Juventus – 13/2

Juventus are set to undergo a rebuild this summer. Thiago Motta’s appointment as head coach was a disappointment, with Igor Tudor taking the reins.

The signing of a marquee centre-forward is of interest, amid doubts over Dusan Vlahovic’s immediate future and uncertainty whether loanee Randal Kolo Muani will extend his time in Turin.

Gyokeres could be drawn to the idea of Serie A and following in the footsteps of iconic compatriots Gunnar Nordahl and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Manchester United – 6/4

Manchester United have been heavily linked with Gyokeres since Ruben Amorim’s appointment at Old Trafford.

Gyokeres thrived under Amorim’s management at Sporting, scoring 43 goals in all competitions during the 2023/24 season. United were the fifth-lowest scorers in the Premier League last season, with only Everton scoring fewer among sides who survived relegation. Rasmus Hojlund has struggled for form and confidence and adding a reliable goalscorer is on the agenda.

Matheus Cunha has already arrived from Wolves, while a deal for Bryan Mbeumo is being sought. Gyokeres could be the final piece of the puzzle for the frontline rebuild.

Arsenal – 4/5

Arsenal remain the bookmakers’ favourites despite indecision in North London. The Gunners have held talks for both Gyokeres and RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, without making concrete progress, publicly, on either player.

Gyokeres is open to a move to the Emirates, where the lack of an out-and-out forward was apparent last season. Last season, Kai Havertz was Arsenal’s leading league scorer with just nine goals. It was the first time Arsenal ended a campaign without a player reaching 10 league goals since 1923/24. After three consecutive runners-up finishes in the Premie League, a reliable number nine could be decisive for Mikel Arteta’s side.
