Jordan Poole is reportedly getting traded for the second time in his NBA career.
The former Michigan standout best known for his long-distance, buzzer-beating 3 to send Michigan to the Sweet 16 in 2018 is going from the Washington Wizards to the New Orleans Pelicans.
According to a report from ESPN’s Shams Charania on Tuesday afternoon, Poole, Saddiq Bey, and the No. 40 pick in this week’s draft are headed to New Orleans in exchange for C.J. McCollum, Kelly Olynyk, and a future second-round pick.
Poole, a late-first-round draft pick by the Golden State Warriors in 2019, played four seasons there before getting traded, helping the Warriors win the 2022 NBA championship. The franchise signed him to a four-year, $140-million contract extension and traded him to Washington just before it kicked in.
Poole started 68 games last season and led the Wizards with 20.5 points and 4.5 assists per game. He shot 43 percent from the field and 38 percent from 3. Washington finished 18-64, the worst record in the Eastern Conference and second worst overall.
After two seasons in Washington, he’ll get a new start with a Pelicans team that wasn’t much better last season (21-61). McCollum and Olynyk both enter the final year of their current contracts.
The 26-year-old Poole, a Milwaukee native, played two seasons at Michigan for then-head coach John Beilein. He showed promise as a scorer off the bench as a freshman, including the memorable NCAA Tournament shot against Houston. Michigan lost in the national championship that year. Poole started as a sophomore and helped Michigan get back to the Sweet 16.
The 2025 NBA draft first round is Wednesday night and the second round is Thursday night.
