Liverpool reportedly had a short chat with Kevin De Bruyne after news broke that he would be leaving Manchester City.
De Bruyne & Liverpool Link Was Short and Sweet
Kevin De Bruyne’s recent holiday with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Brazilian icon Ronaldo brought about some serious raised eyebrows.
De Bruyne and van Dijk are close friends despite being in rivalries on the pitch. Their friendly photo sparked rumours. This comes especially after Kevin confirmed is exit from Manchester City.
According to The Athletic, there was a brief talk between Liverpool and the Belgian star. Some sources even suggest that talks may have been triggered by De Bruyne himself. His motivation was to show City they made a mistake in letting him leave.
Meanwhile, Mo Salah also added to the speculation by joking there was space for his old Chelsea teammate at Anfield. That said, despite the camaraderie and speculation from the media, the Reds never made a formal offer.
Wirtz is Liverpool’s Long-Term Plan
The fans toyed with the idea of signing the Premier League’s top playmaker on a free. Although, Liverpool clearly had other plans. The club instead broke the British transfer record to sign 22-year-old Florian Wirtz for £116m.
City were previously in the race for Wirtz but shifted focus to Rayan Cherk. That was after realising the Reds were already ahead in talks. Though the PL champions also met with Cherki, he was just a backup in case the Wirtz deal didn’t work out.
At 33, De Bruyne didn’t fit into the Reds’ long-term vision. Given their already ageing core that includes Van Dijk and Salah. Arne Slot chose a future star over a short-term fix. However, some fans might’ve liked seeing City’s icon in red. Now, the Reds are building for the next decade.
