Sporting Club de Portugal winger Geny Catamo has admitted that Ruben Amorim’s departure for Manchester United in November last year left most of the squad in tears.
[A Bola have an interview](https://www.abola.pt/?srsltid=AfmBOop2rboiHLUq7zpnGWRHN2nh4TjjKsk9jcoeGFJSCYeVCXSbtz9a) with the 24-year-old today in which he’s happy to admit that the Portuguese manager’s move to Manchester United was an upsetting one.
Amorim officially moved to Old Trafford on November 1st, replacing Erik ten Hag at the helm after a disappointing start to the season.
It brought an end to a very successful four-year spell in charge of Sporting for Amorim, who managed the club for 231 games and established them as the leading side in Portugal ahead of Benfica and Porto, winning two league titles, two Taça da Liga’s and the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira.
Catamo was one of many players to break through under him, with Amorim handing him his league debut when he was just 20 years old in December 2021. He went on to make 59 appearances under him, and admits he was upset to see him depart.
_“A week before, we received the information that Manchester United were interested in the coach,”_ he said.
_“Ruben Amorim just told us that everything was fine, not to worry, that we only had to worry about the game in Braga. It was an epic game, losing 0-2 and turning it around to 4-2 in the second half, with the best football we’ve played all season._
_“We were all celebrating in the locker room, the coach arrived and gave us the news that he was going to Manchester United. We were sad and most of us cried. I think I was one of the ones who cried the most that day.”_
Catamo could be set to join Amorim in the Premier League this summer. He’s been linked to several clubs this summer already, [with Aston Villa and Everton at the front](http://sportwitness.co.uk/everton-and-aston-villa-face-further-tussle-for-signing-como-move-into-picture/) of the queue at this moment in time.
He won’t be drawn on that for the time being, though, and instead insists that playing for Sporting remains an honour for him.
_“Representing Sporting means a lot. It’s a dream to wear this jersey and it’s an obligation for me to represent this club in the best way possible and my motto is to give everything on the field, to show the lion’s spirit,”_ he added.
