Manchester United’s summer rebuild is gathering pace, but they may soon face frustration in their pursuit of a key target identified by manager Ruben Amorim.
The club is working hard behind the scenes to bring in a new striker, with the focus on securing a proven goal scorer capable of transforming their attacking threat.
While United remain linked to several names, one of the most consistent and high-priority targets has been Sporting CP frontman Viktor Gyokeres — a player Amorim knows intimately.

However, fresh developments in the transfer race have complicated matters for United, with Premier League rivals now stepping up their interest.
And it appears that one of their biggest competitors has entered the fray with serious intent.
Liverpool have joined the race to sign Viktor Gyokeres as they prepare to reshape their attack ahead of the 2025/26 season, as per Correio da Manha.
According to reports in Portugal, the Reds have added the Swedish striker to a shortlist of names being considered to replace Darwin Nunez, who is closing in on a move to Serie A champions Napoli.
Arsenal and Manchester United have both previously expressed interest in the 27-year-old, with Arsenal even tabling a formal offer of €55 million plus €10 million in add-ons — which Sporting swiftly rejected.

The Portuguese club remain firm on their valuation of €80 million, and their sporting director is said to have made it clear that only a full release clause will trigger a sale.
Liverpool, who have just spent €135 million to break their transfer record on Florian Wirtz, are reluctant to meet that figure unless player sales help fund the deal.
One such sale could be Luis Diaz, with Barcelona reportedly advancing in their pursuit of the Colombian, which would open the door for Gyokeres.
Crucially, Viktor Gyokeres is eager to leave Sporting and has told those close to him that he dreams of playing in the Premier League next season.
While United still hold hope of reuniting the striker with Amorim at Old Trafford, Liverpool’s accelerating interest and financial power could see them steal a march in the coming days.
