Cade Otton Learning From One Of The Best

Preparing for contract year.

Not very often do you see Hall of Famers, or future Hall of Famers, excel as coaches.

It happens, but it usually seems guys who had to fight and claw their way into the NFL, if they ever made it to the NFL, blossom into good coaches way more than past stars.

That doesn’t mean a player can’t learn a thing or two from one of the game’s greats.

As Joe typed yesterday, Cade Otton is attending “Tight End University” this week. It’s a camp for NFL tight ends and all are welcome.

Developed by Greg Olsen, Travis Kelce and George Kittle, it’s a camp for just tight ends that includes a lot of X’s and O’s work, practice work on a football field, and all sorts of seminars, including smart ways to invest your money.

The purpose is for tight ends to help out their brothers in arms. If one guy gets paid because he learned a technique at the camp, that just means sooner or later, the other tight ends will get paid. You know, a rising tide lifts all boats.

(Von Miller started a similar camp for pass rushers, “Sack Summit,” where former Bucs great Warren Sapp works as an instructor. There is also a like-minded camp for offensive linemen.)

This year’s “Tight End University” camp even had a reception where all of the tight ends’ WAGS were invited. There was even a meet-and-greet with singer Taylor Swift. Gee, wonder how that happened?

So in a cool video below, Kelce is showing campers a trick he uses in order to help him get separation on routes. And who is front and center, paying rapt attention? Cade Otton, that’s who.

Otton may be the perfect example of why “Tight End University” was founded. Otton is in a contract year. And for the most part, he’s proven to be rather durable.

If Otton can learn one thing from this camp that helps him get more touchdown catches, Otton is going to get paid by someone.

And that’s the whole point of why the camp exists: help guys grow so they can get paid. Because the higher the salaries get for tight ends, the more they all bank change.
