de Fougerolles helps Canada into last eight

Fulham centre back Luc de Fougerolles played 77 minutes as Canada beat nine-man El Salvador 2-0 in Houston this morning to reach the quarter-finals of the Gold Cup.

The Canadians dominated the first period but struggled to break down a stubborn El Salvadorian defence, with Jonathan David seeing a first half penalty saved. But El Salvador’s ill-discipline cost them any chance of progression, with experienced midfielder Santos Ortiz seeing red for two bookings before Jairo Henriquez was dismissed for elbowing Alistair Johnston in the face.

Canada quickly made their numerical advantage pay as David made amends for his penalty miss by slotting home after a beautiful ball by Mathieu Choiniere and Buchanan rifled home the clinching second just two minutes later.

Jesse Marsch’s side will now play Guatemala in Minnesota on Sunday.
